Abstract

To assess the relation between device-based and live-fire M16A2 rifle marksmanship performance, 2 groups of 51 U.S. Army National Guard soldiers were tested on the Engagement Skills Trainer (EST) a day before shooting for record on the range. A significant (p ≤ .05) positive linear relation between EST and record fire scores was found for the normative group (Group 1) and confirmed for the cross-validation group (Group 2), with the former group's predictive model accounting for nearly half of the variance in the record fire scores of both groups. A practicable, EST-based tool was then developed from pooled group data to help marksmanship trainers predict the probability of individual soldier record fire qualification at the Marksman, Sharpshooter, and Expert levels. Additional field testing needed to ensure successful tool application is discussed.
