Abstract
Nonadherence to prescribed medical regimens among youth and their families is common, occurring in approximately 50% of children with a chronic illness, and leads to adverse health outcomes and increased costs to families and the health care system.1,2 Although no studies have been conducted in pediatrics, among adults, low levels of medication adherence are associated with higher health care costs, totaling an increase in $2000-$8000 spent per patient.2 Interventions to improve adherence therefore are critical for promoting health outcomes and reducing health care expenses in pediatric chronic illness.
