Abstract
In this chapter, we exemplify the application of the method of ‘system dynamics’ in three diverse heritage case studies including (i) a study of polymer degradation in heritage plastic materials, (ii) a study of paper degradation in historic archival collections and (iii) a study of residents’ decision-making on energy efficiency and heritage conservation. The diversity of the case studies allows a critical reflection towards the use of system dynamics, highlighting the potential advantages but also limitations of this method. The underpinning premise of the chapter is that heritage is a dynamic and complex system consisted of material and immaterial dimensions. Hence, we need to develop or critically adapt systemic, complex and dynamic methods, such as the method of system dynamics, in order to comprehend heritage change as well as the impacts of heritage over time.
