Abstract

This paper presents, through a successful operational case, a while-drilling litho-pressure prediction methodology. An initial shale pressure model was built using high resolution 3D seismic velocity data and regional geological knowledge. This Pre-drill model contributed to optimize the drilling parameters. This initial model was then updated, in real time, with an integrated use of a comprehensive set of geophysical and geological data. The final calibrated litho-pressure model is accurate enough to give operators more confidence in order to drill safer wells and avoid potential hazards related to overpressured formations. The use of a real-time constrained look-ahead VSP inversion technique allowed an accurate depth to target estimation and enabled high-resolution litho-pressure prediction ahead of the bit.
