Abstract

At Springside Chestnut Hill Academy (SCH) we educate innovators, break‐through thinkers and problem solvers. To that end, the science department has developed “Introduction to Pharmacology” to expose students to some of the principles of drug mechanisms of action. For example, students form drug discovery teams to test the chemical properties of aspirin formulations, and to measure the antibiotic activity of natural compounds such as honey, and tea tree oil. They create films of their research using iMovie and Garageband. A field trip to Pennsylvania Hospital and to The Mutter Museum introduce the history of medicine in Philadelphia. Dose response curves are analyzed in the “Drunken Fly Lab” and the “Worm Cardiovascular Lab”. Guest pharmacologists visit to discuss their research and to mentor student research projects. The goal of this popular elective course, which is in its sixth year at SCH, is to inspire students to consider taking future courses in the fields of pharmacy, pharmacology, nursing, and medicine.
