Abstract

Based on the systems perspective of Adler’s Individual Psychology, parent consultation is an integral component of Adlerian play therapy. The assessment of personality priorities is one tool available to Adlerian therapists to help guide the therapeutic intervention process. This article explores the use of personality priorities as part of parent consultation in Adlerian play therapy. Each personality priority typology is discussed, as well as how the Adlerian therapist can work with the parent’s typology to best meet the family’s needs. Finally, a case study demonstrates the use of Nelsen and Lott’s “top card” activity as an intervention strategy in a family Adlerian play therapy session and through later parent consultation.
