Abstract

Geology curricula rarely pay enough attention to esthetic aspects of the Earth. and landscape art can both serve a useful purpose in geology classes. Artists and geologists both strive to recognize patterns, simplifying the world by abstracting its essence. Earth art and “installations” deal with perceptions of Earth just as geological models do. Art provides metaphors and icons for developing scientific concepts and deserves a place in geoscience classes along with physics, math, chemistry, and biology.
