Abstract

Fulfilment the low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) is one of the important requirements of the grid codes (GCs) for connecting wind power plants (WPPs) to the power system. This study proposes a parallel capacitor-based bridge-type fault current limiter (PCBFCL) with metal oxide visitor (MOV) to comply the LVRT requirement of WPPs. The configuration of conventional BFCL in three steps is modified and developed to comply the WPP environment requirements. Extended time domain simulations are carried out in PSCAD/EMTDC environment to prove the efficiency of the PCBFCL under symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults. Also, the series dynamic resistor (SDR) is considered to compare its capability with the proposed PCBFCL. The aggregated self-excited induction generator (SEIG) is utilized to WPP model. Consideration simulation results, the PCBFCL provides the most effective series device to satisfy the LVRT capability of SEIG-based WPPs and has superior performance than the SDR.
