Abstract
AbstractThe growth of main maize weevils Sitophilus zeamais (Motschulsky) (SzM) was studied in maize storage minienvironments (MEs) with different oxygen concentration (CO2) ranging from 0 %, 5 %, 10 %, 15 % and 21 %. The obtained results showed that at low oxygen concentrations of 15 %, 10 % and 5 %, the total number of weevils presented in the MEs (alive or dead) at moments of tallying weevils, decreased as a function of CO2. In ME at 5 % oxygen, after 80 testing days there were 90 weevils appeared; but in ME at 21 % oxygen there were 576 weevils appeared. In ME at CO2 = 0 % there was no weevils appeared. Consequently there was not found any dead weevil, in terms of pure mathematics as same as at oxygen concentration of 21 %. It was found that, in the test frame at oxygen concentration range of 5‐21 %, the lower the oxygen concentration in the ME, the lower the number of weevils appeared, and the larger the number of death weevils. However the ME with CO2 = 0 %, where was no weevil SzM appeared, was considered as one of the most suitable for the maize grain preservation without using any chemical.
