Abstract

Advances in the research and enquiries into the development of coronary heart disease (CHD) have led to changes in the pharmacological management of CHD and the role nitrates play within this. The following paper will review the pharmacology of nitrates and the role nitrates play in the management of stable angina. Nitrates are seen as an effective drug in the management of stable angina. The benefits of nitrate therapy is the ability to cause vasodilatation, coronary artery dilatation and reduce myocardial workload, enabling myocardial oxygen supply and demand needs to be met. The most important need for patients with stable angina is the education required to ensure the full potential of drug therapy is gained.
