Abstract

Thesis writers at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY have enjoyed a unique computing environment on Cornell's IBM 4381 mainframe computer. After many years of supporting a customized Waterloo SCRIPT text processing environment and intensive, centralized support, we have decided to remove the mainframe thesis formatting software and encourage writers to produce documents on microcomputers. Officially this plan begins in September 1986. This paper discusses the preparations made by User Support Staff at Cornell University to educate and service the new group of users now faced with managing large, complex documents in a microcomputer environment.
