Abstract

Using grant resources from the Nippon Foundation, the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and other donors, Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) assists smallholder farmers to achieve significant improvements in their agricultural productivity, production, and prosperity. In its endeavor to improve its level of impact and its ability to demonstrate beneficial results, SAA decided to apply matrix management to its operations in four African nations. The effort led SAA to develop a new data‐driven strategic plan that improved smallholder farmers’ productivity and well‐being, and ultimately transformed the organization's own systems structure. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
