SummarySince so many MIT techniques use electronic imaging, it is no surprise that education and communication are increasingly based on presentation from the treatment room. Images from endoscopic cameras, ultrasound and X-ray equipment, scanners and standard television cameras can all be fed to education rooms. In this review, it will be assumed that the application is to transmit clinical techniques to remote expert audiences. Interaction is an important requirement of the television link, which should not put the audience member at a disadvantage when compared to attending the procedure. Therefore, television must convey the process and the environment in order to involve the audience. The following review of television transmission technology is an analysis of strengths and weaknesses only for this purpose.
