Abstract

Global positioning systems (GPS) have revolutionized the acquisition of locational data for use in surveying, photogrammetry, and mapping and analysis with geographic information systems (GIS). GPS technology has also been used to georeference ground‐level images to be used in remote sensing image interpretation. This article describes the use of an affordable commercial system to link GPS data with oblique video taken from a low‐flying aircraft. Practical issues about system setup, image acquisition conditions, and use of the air video images with corresponding satellite images are discussed and illustrated with image examples from an actual test flight. Such GPS‐linked oblique air video provides a method to obtain up‐to‐date imagery for use as an aid in selecting training sites for supervised land cover classification, interpreting spectral classes in unsupervised clustering, and characterizing sites used for accuracy assessments.
