Abstract

Freight transportation is a key part of supply chains and urban economies. However, freight vehicles are also large contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. This paper focuses on demand management strategies to mitigate the environmental impacts of freight transportation and suggests the use of GPS data to estimate the savings in emissions promoted by such strategies. The authors describe a custom computational system that processes the data to estimate GHG emissions. Two examples of application are presented: (i) the case of off-hours deliveries in three cities (Bogotá, New York City, and São Paulo), and (ii) the possibility of shifting/extending the working hours at the Port of Elizabeth-Newark to allow freight vehicles to travel to the port at less congested times of the day.
