Abstract

In the United States the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) of 1991 has encouraged the development of information management systems. GIS, to promote safety and efficient expenditure of public resources, is an example. This paper therefore describes the development of a traffic safety GIS prototype for spatial analysis of traffic collisions in Honolulu, Hawaii. Various classes of spatial analyses, which involve points, segments, and zones, with special reference to the nature of motor vehicle collisions and traffic safety research, have been developed.
