Abstract

Most literature on fuzzy control deals with the use of fuzzy rules to implement low-level control functions, such as nonlinear proportional-integral-derivative (PID) type control. This paper discusses various ways that fuzzy logic can be used in high-level control functions. Specifically, we examine the use of fuzzy logic for supervisory control, for classifying the operating environment, for process modeling and optimization, and for expressing controller performance metrics. The purpose of this paper is to stimulate the use of fuzzy logic to provide new control functions that are outside the domain of traditional control.KeywordsFuzzy controlsupervisory controlprocess optimization
