Abstract

Science magazines did not use expert sources more often or even carry proportionately more breaking science news than did business and news magazines, this content analysis of coverage of the 1989 “cold fusion” controversy shows. News and business magazines—contrary to study expectations—just about matched science magazines in the various comparisons made. The study suggests that readers of general news magazines can expect to be informed of major breaking science stories about as well as readers of specialized science magazines.
