Abstract

Homer’s epic poem, Odyssey, and creative drama technique help individuals develop the relationship with the inner self and the psychological capacity of realistic optimism. Time, totality, and multiplicity are the elements inherent in the epic poetry that allows participants to bring their experiences, realize their inner voices, and express their feelings and thoughts. Through discussion, diaries, and role transactions participants co-create the “reality”, many different stories become apparent and interpretations are enriched. The lessons learned are then linked to the real life. The analysis of the data collected shows that using epic poetry can foster a learning climate of acceptance and enthusiasm and alter pessimistic interpretations and/or enrich optimistic ones. Personal reflections as an educator using this approach conclude the chapter.
