Abstract

Students obtain hands-on experience in the use of dynamic simulation software by measuring the time dependence of the flow of water among three containers and modeling the process on the computer. The experiment is a useful analog for consecutive first-order chemical kinetics processes. A tutorial utilizing the Powerism dynamic simulation software package as a tool for exploring chemical kinetics is also described. The tutorial enables students to explore the consequences of different reaction schemes on the dynamic behavior of the species involved. The dynamic simulation software treatment of an adiabatic kinetics scheme is also presented.
