Abstract

This preliminary report on the development of an innovative community health rotation describes the use of distance education technology for teaching and administration and suggests implications for PA programs. Students gain skills needed to understand, become part of, and influence the health practices of a rural, medically underserved community, while maintaining their medical knowledge and skills. The rotation is part of a technology-oriented project to improve PA education and thus improve health care in rural communities sponsored by the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The project is entitled “An Appalachian Community Campus Partnership for Health” (4 D21 PE 10107-03), administered by the College of Health Sciences in Roanoke, Virginia.
