Abstract

NURSES ARE PIVOTAL to safe patient care. It is projected that by bringing registered nurse (RN) ratios up to the staffing level of the top hospitals, 70,000 adverse outcomes could be avoided (Needleman, Buerhaus, Stewart, Zelevinsky, & Mattke, 2006). In addition to their contribution toward safe patient care, nurses provide a potential solution to the problems of the underserved and their lack of access to mental health care (Hanrahan & Sullivan-Marx, 2005). Psychiatric Mental Health (PMH) Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) provide mental health services to the poorest and to the oldest of the old (Wilk et al., 2004), and, in at least 20 states, the proportion of APNs working in rural health settings almost double that of psychiatrists working in these settings (Hartley, Hart, Hanrahan, & Loux, 2004).
