Abstract

Several studies conducted in the last 20 years have confirmed an increase in patients with sensitive skin. In the industrialised world, the prevalence of sensitive skin has been found to be approximately 40%. Cosmeceutical preparations have gained broad acceptance in successfully treating sensitive skin either independently or in combination with other treatments. In this article, the author will define sensitive skin, and identify the causes and outcomes. Effective ingredients for the management of the condition will be discussed, including lactobionic acid and maltobionic acid, which have been shown to calm inflammation and help fortify the skin's barrier function.
