Abstract

North Carolina has recently implemented a new earth-sciences curriculum at both the middle-grade and secondary levels. The changes will be beneficial to those enrolled in the courses; however, most of the teachers involved do not have adequate academic preparation in earth sciences. In rural areas, due to long driving distances, it is difficult for teachers to find time to upgrade their certifications. To this end, MicroNet, a computer telecommunication system, is used to deliver both necessary course work and support for teachers and a variety of enrichment activities for their students via distance learning.
