Abstract

AbstractCompetency alignment, commonly called job redesign, in the past, can be a vital element in implementing and sustaining successful organizational change initiatives, including downsizings, corporate restructurings, and business process redesign and reengineering efforts. This is because it dramatically affects the success of change initiatives at a “transactional” level in an organization—that is, the level at which actual, everyday work is accomplished. This article outlines a systematic and robust way that organizations can use competency alignment as a fundamental building block in planning and implementing change efforts. If carefully undertaken, competency alignment can help invigorate, reinforce, and, in some cases, salvage organizational change initiatives that might not otherwise succeed.
