Abstract

Optical head is an important component for optical disk drive and can be used in non-contact measurement and positioning. The use of Holographic Optical Element (HOE) can geartly reduce the component counts, size and weight of the optical head. A new configuration of optical head with Multi-function HOE (wavelength compensation and beam shape correction) is proposed. The system mainly consists of two lenses and two HOEs. The two HOEs are placed with an angle so that not only can the wavelength variation be compensated, but also the elliptical beam from diode laser can be changed to a circular shape. The wavelength variation of laser can be tolerated ± 6% of the lasing wavelength and the beam shaping factor is almost 3.0. We developed a method to make IR holograms using CGH (Computer Generated Hologram). The experimental results are presented.
