Abstract

Suicide attempts are increasing among youth. Even more common are nonfatal suicide attempts, defined as self‐directed behaviors resulting in injury or potential for injury in which suicide could result, as well as broader self‐harm and nonsuicidal self‐injury (NSSI). Because NSSI is a powerful predictor of future suicide attempts, it is important to have a way to prevent such attempts in these high‐risk youths. However, there are no proven interventions for preventing suicide attempts by youths who are harming themselves, a gap researchers addressed by evaluating Safe Alternatives for Teens and Youths (SAFETY).
