Abstract

In recent years, the technology on plant varietal identification had great progress. Varietal identification using morphological traits has been gradually replaced by the biochemical and molecular technologies owing to the performance of morphological traits are usually affected by the environmental factors. The mainly adopted technologies in biochemical level are isozymes and storage protein. Nevertheless, the technologies in molecular level including RFLP, RAPD, AFLP, SCAR and SSR are further rapid and popular. Those technologies of varietal identification are widely applied in the registration of new varieties which will protect the intellectual property right for plant breeders, the testing for varietal purity of seed production, as well as the measurement of genetic diversity. The main goal of this report is to introduce the developmental process of varietal identification technologies and their application.
