Abstract
Bar coding systems are the most suitable data entry device where hand-held reading is required. The systems are laser-based, and can be interfaced to other computer equipment. Scanners are becoming more reliable and less expensive. Verifiers can be used to check the effectiveness of scanners. In the future bar coding systems will become smaller and will be further integrated into other systems, such as automated manufacturing.
