Abstract

Standards of care do not usually change overnight. But today, as medical practice evolves rapidly, standards of care could shift faster than tradition suggests. Media focus on medical advances occurs well before any changes are implemented and become available as diagnostic tests, vaccines, devices, new drugs, or novel procedures. Accordingly, patients may have heightened expectations as to the innovations in care that they might receive. As the medical community incorporates deep learning and artificial intelligence (AI) into some specialties, particularly emergency radiology, it may be prudent to ponder if we are on the cusp of unrealistic public expectations regarding the use of AI in routine radiologic diagnosis.
