Abstract
The truck-shovel system is the major form of materials handling in open pit mines and its cost constitutes the major portion of mine expenses. Stochastic simulation is commonly used in optimising truck-shovel operations. Several simulation languages and software have been developed for truck-shovel system. These include general-purpose simulation languages such as GPSS, MODSIM, SIMSCRIPT and SLAM, etc. and specialised packages for specific purposes, which include VEHSIM and TALPAC for truck-shovel operations. One of the more recent simulation systems, ARENA, was employed to model a truck-shovel system; a step by step procedure of constructing the non-dispatching model is explained.
