Abstract

This paper describes the architecture of a video production system based on a centralized, high-performance file system with a robotic tape-based archive. This system permits the applications in the production process to access content directly, without file transfers, and allows content to be available for editing and processing immediately after it is received. A high-performance file system can perform simultaneous reads and writes at an aggregate bandwidth of 12 Gbytes/sec or more. A video production system architecture based on a centralized high-performance storage system, accessed directly by the production applications, is presented in this paper in contrast to the more traditional architecture based on video servers and file transfers.
