Abstract

ABSTRACT This article presents the author's introduction of a computer algebra system (CAS) into a traditional course in ordinary differential equations. The author surveys two didactic principles found in the literature: the White-Box/Black-Box Principle and the use of Forward Homework. The article also includes seven examples of how the author uses a CAS in his course as guided by the stated pedagogical ideas. The paper should prove useful to others who wish to introduce a CAS into their courses in such a way that the course is enhanced and not overwhelmed by the technology.
