Abstract
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has undertaken the responsibility for obtaining the data necessary for a more precise assessment of the oil and gas potential in the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska (NPRA).The most recent estimate of 5 billion barrels of oil and gas condensate and 14.3 trillion ft 3 of gas is based on relatively limited information. To gain a better understanding of the geological, geochemical, and geophysical characteristics of the NPRA, the USGS will carry out a test well‐drilling program while collecting and processing 4672 km of seismic surveys. The first year's wells will be four medium‐ depth exploratory or confirmation wells ranging from 3050 to 3660 m and two deep wells ranging from 4500 to 6000 m.
