Abstract

New experimental implementations of optical parallel logic using commercially available inexpensive liquid crystal televisions (LCTVs) and magnetooptic spatial light modulators (MOSLMs) are discussed. Logic gates as switches are essential elements in digital computing systems. A digital computer can be described as a finite state machine, whose physical realization requires numerous Boolean logic gates. Boolean logic operations include sixteen possible functions or gates. The complete implementation of sixteen optical parallel logic gates is discussed. Different schemes are applied to the system using LCTVs and the system using MOSLMs. The experimental results and the application of xor gate to a real time binary image subtraction are presented.
