Abstract

Taxidermists at the California Academy of Sciences found that the aromatic sulphonamide derivative, Edolan U, protected bird and mammal skins from attack by clothes moths and dermestid beetles, with advantages over arsenic or borax. The article details methods of application to skins during preparation and to those already mounted. It describes preliminary work on methods for applying the treatment to mounted insects. An iliustration suggests its use in protecting ethnological specimens from insect attack. Properties of Edolan U and precautions in its use are noted.
