Abstract

A program has been developed for estimating the Watson characterization factor and surface tension of petroleum fractions. The only input required is the specific gravity of the fraction. This program, called SURFAC, works well for petroleum fractions with specific gravity values in the range 0.68–1.07. Estimation of the surface tension can be carried out in the temperature range 0–242 °C (i.e. 273–515 K). When tested with specific gravity and characterization factor data of 85 petroleum fractions, the program was found to predict the characterization factor and surface tension with absolute average errors of 1.72 and 0.78%, respectively. The program was found to give errors in the range 6–18% in estimating the characterization factor of coal-derived liquid fuels.
