Abstract

Introduction: Balloon-assisted stone extraction (BASE) can be applied to remove the common bile duct (CBD) stones during laparoscopic CBD exploration (LCBDE). This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy and complications of BASE for CBD stones. Method: A total of 167 patients with CBD stones undergo LCBDE using BASE. The efficacy and complications of this technique were evaluated. Factor for failure of this technique also evaluated. Result: Of the 167 patients, 161 underwent LCBDE using BASE successfully. Remaining 6 patients were applied Basket for lithotripsy additionally and there was no failure of CBD stone removal in 6 patients. Also, there was no procedure related complication. The risk for Basket application was large stone (>2cm) and CBD stricture. Conclusion: BASE during LCBDE is safe and effective techniques for the treatment of CBD stones with <2cm size without CBD stricture.
