Abstract
The Southwest Florida Water Management District was prompted to focus on creative water management practices when years of drought conditions caused a severe water shortage in southwest Florida. The Southern Water Use Caution Area was created to manage the state's water resources in eight counties of the SWFWMD, reduce the region's dependency on groundwater, and halt saltwater intrusion along the coast. Created in 1982 by interlocal agreement, the Peace River Manasota Regional Water Supply Authority consists of four member governments: Charlotte, DeSoto, Manatee, and Sarasota counties. Working with its members and SWFWMD, the authority turned to conjunctive use–harmoniously combining surface water and groundwater supplies–to maximize use of existing infrastructure and sources to meet projected short‐term supply deficits.
