Abstract

Use of veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) is a potential option to bridge critically unwell patients to heart transplantation. However, given the critically unwell nature of this patient cohort, morbidity and mortality are expectedly high, with previous literature reporting 30-day mortality of up to 30%. This study investigated the mortality of patients on preoperative VA-ECMO prior to heart transplantation in a single Australian centre.
