Abstract

Abstract In the tropics, the high costs and limited availability of high quality tuber seed are the major constraints for successful potato production. In the last fifteen years or so, true potato seed (TPS) has emerged as one alternative with exceptional potential for eliminating many of the problems associated with tuber seeds. The technology has generated greater expectation and many local potato programs are already using TPS within their propagation programs. Yet, given the level of expertise needed to manage TPS‐based potato production, it is not clear whether TPS can be successfully used at the farmer level. This paper reviews key features of the TPS technology and assesses the performance of TPS at various locations in the tropics.
