Abstract

Temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) is a term used to describe changes involving muscle, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and associated structures disorders. An adequate anamnesis, clinical examination and images are necessary for a correct diagnosis. Thus, the objective of this study is to present the case of a 48-year-old woman, a bruxer, who sought the TMD service of a dentistry institution referring to pain in the bilateral TMJ region. After initial examinations, pain was observed on muscle palpation in the masseter region and reciprocal clicking. Panoramic radiography and magnetic resonance imaging were requested and the patient was referred to the physiotherapy clinic to perform manual therapy and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), associated with the use of repositioning plate. One week after the beginning of the treatment, pain improvement was reported and there was continuity of pain for a period of 3 months, thus remission of TMD signs and symptoms.
