Abstract

The WISC-R Performance Scale and the Non-verbal Scale of the K-ABC were administered to 50 severely/profoundly hearing-impaired children in the USA and to a comparable sample of 51 hearing-impaired children in Scotland. The US sample achieved scores on both instruments similar to those of the tests' standardization samples. The Scottish children achieved scores comparable to those of the US standardization samples for the WISC-R but not for the K-ABC Non-verbal Scale. The correlation between the two scales was 0.84 for the US sample and 0.71 for the Scottish sample. Factor analyses revealed only one factor associated with the subtests of each instrument for each sample and when subtests of both instruments were pooled. The use of the WISC-R Performance Scale in Scotland appeared supported by these data but use of the K-ABC merits more study.
