Abstract

Tau, the RC time constant of alveolar CO disappearance, is the reciprocal of Krogh’s K. We have reexamined her K by determining graphically the time constant of the CO disappearance and have characterized it in terms of its RC components. R is equal to 1/diffusing capacity to CO (Dlco) and C is equivalent to alveolar volume divided by barometric pressure (VA/Pb). Theoretically, the RC constant is a more reproducible value than Dlco as determined by the single breath test. Its value is 12 sec in normal subjects regardless of age, height, or sex. Its use can markedly simplify the calculation of Dlco.
