Abstract

The human placenta is a useful model for demonstrating and practicing the techniques of intravenous (IV) needle insertion and umbilical vessel catheterization in neonates. MATERIALS AND METHODS Placentas that do not require pathologic examination are utilized as the teaching model. IV Insertion The amnion is removed from the infant's side of the placenta for easier needle insertion. One placenta is sufficient for two students. The use of gloves is optional. Indications and complications of IV therapy are reviewed, and insertion sites and methods are discussed. A demonstration of inserting an IV needle is given by the instructor. As in the real-life situation, blood return occurs in the scalp vein tubing on entering the vessel.
