Abstract
1. The cutting of fibrous polymer composites is characterized by cyclic changes in mechanoluminescence and cutting force and is governed by the conditions of microcrack nucleation, growth, and coalescence (into a macrocrack) and the formation of new surfaces. 2. The frequency of alternation depends on cutting speed and the direction of reinforcement of the composite relative to the vector of the principal cutting motion. 3. The optimum conditions for machining fibrous polymer composites are as follows: high cutting speed (above 15 m/sec), which restricts the conditions for heating of the working zone; minimum cross-sectional area of the cut (commensurate with the transverse dimensions of the reinforcing fibers and strands). 4. The degree of degradation of the composite during machining is determined by the angle between the direction of the reinforcing elements and the direction of the vector of the principal cutting motion.
