Abstract

The levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) is a highly effective reversible contraceptive and provides effective treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding, endometriosis, and dysmenorrhea. There are very few case reports of the copper intrauterine device (IUD) in patients with uterine anomalies, and these are mostly reports of complications where the uterine anomaly was discovered after a pregnancy occurred. A uterine anomaly is considered a relative contraindication to the use of an IUD; however, some case reports have suggested that IUDs may be safely used in this setting.
