Abstract

The Datacomputer is a very large-capacity, centralized database management facility for distributed networks. It was developed for the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) by CCA, and is currently available on the Arpanet. The Datacomputer is the primary storage and retrieval resource for the Vela Seismological Network. Several different types of seismic data are stored on the Datacomputer. The size of the database is growing at a rate of about 30 billion bits per month. File organizations attempt to make the most significant data rapidly available to seismologists on Velanet. Special communications protocols were designed and a dedicated processor employed to accomodate high band-width, real-time seismic array data.
