Abstract

Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME) fibers were used to collect and measure downwind concentrations of short chain volatile fatty acids in a synthetic odor plume. Concentrations from SPME fibers exposed to ambient air movement are compared to those obtained with a controlled air speed (0.8 m/s). The influence of air speed and temperature, sampling time, and the diffusivity of odorous compounds are discussed. A controlled airflow device for use with SPME sampling does not appear to be necessary for outdoor ambient air sampling.
