Abstract
Expert guidelines and the “Choosing Wisely” initiative recommend single fraction radiation therapy (RT) as the preferred treatment for painful bone metastases because it achieves comparable pain relief, is more convenient, and is less costly than multiple fraction treatment. In 2011, ASTRO published clinical guidelines supporting single fraction RT as an appropriate treatment for uncomplicated painful bone metastases. We report findings from a cohort of commercially insured patients with six prevalent cancers treated before and after the ASTRO guidelines were published.
